Another important factor in the development of Trujillo was the arrival of the Garífunas, who settled on the beaches of the bay. There cultural influence is still very much in evidence today.

The Caverns of Cuyamel are south of the city, where the archaeologists have found vestiges of pre-Columbian cultures.

Approximately 14 kilometers out of Trujillo, via dirt road, is the village of Santa Fe, with one of most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world.

On the way, tourists pass in front of the hotel and restaurant Camping, a pleasant establishment where it is possible to enjoy the paradisiacal beaches, excellent food and rustic surroundings, but with all the modern comforts.

Continuing by highway, the village of Guadalupe is a great place to find excellent Garífuna craftsmen. Another point of interest is the Lagoon of Guaimoreto, an exceptional place to observe birds in totally natural surroundings.

The Capíro and Calentura National Parks offer extraordinary natural surroundings to walk in the forest and to swim in thermal waters.

Just about 8 kilometers from Trujillo, in the community of Silin, is a small, comfortable hotel, with several services that include thermal water swimming pools, as well as massages.

To the other end of this beautiful bay it is Port Castilla, with modern facilities for many boats coming in and out, carrying and shipping. On the beach in Trujillo, there are several “champas” where drink and food can be found inexpensively. One example is “Jerry’s,” where the customer comments throughout the years can be read.

For something romantic or maybe a honeymoon, a supper in the Hotel Brinkley Villas is superb. They also offer a good breakfast with the best view of Trujillo. Trujillo is also a good place to venture into the mystic Honduran Mosquitia, where you can find communities like Brus Lagoon, Palacios and Lempira Port, and continuing on until Port Heads in Nicaragua.
