Candido Amaya is the director of Eurocenter's newest office in Tegucigalpa, which was inaugurated just a few weeks ago. As he describes, "a Eurocenter is a unit of cooperation which is meant to promote and strengthen the commercial relations between Latin America and the European Union."
Usually Eurocenters are established within pre-existing organizations that already have a recognized history, and are in charge of the organization and promotion of activities within the Al-Invest III program. According to information provided by Amaya, Al-Invest III is the largest European Commission program to foster small and medium size companies in Europe and Latin America. As written on their website "the program offers financial support to economic operators from the European Union and Latin America who wish to set up joint initiatives in the area of economic co-operation". Among these, Al-Invest III and Eurocenters around the world put together many different promotional events and informative meetings such as trade fairs or training and development workshops for small and medium size businesses.
One of the many goals of Eurocenters is to facilitate the contact with adequate European networks in order to build stronger relationships between countries. Through various exchange programs Eurocenters are striving to achieve a mutual institutional understanding of the international business discourse that links companies together, while acquiring indispensable knowledge about each country's unique economical and business culture. Furthermore, Amaya claims "it is important to identify the needs of businesses and help them improve the presentation of their projects while giving them support and adequate resources in their search for a European partner."
Since 1994, Al-Invest has worked hand in hand with Eurocenters, industrial associations and consultant companies as a springboard between both continents. "We provide information and training to Latin American businesses and sensitize them to the opportunities of cooperation that are provided by institutions within our program," recalls Amaya. These institutions can be chambers of commerce, regional and national development agencies or professional associations and federations. The Consortium and the European Commission signed a contract in 2003 with the aim of reaching out to more than 30 000 small and medium enterprises on both territories while "developing trade and investment relations in order to create stable relations and new jobs".
