The Reserve Biosphere Rio Platano is located in the heart of the Honduran Mosquitia, and is part of the Biological Mesoamerican Corridor, with more than two million hectares. It is habituated by five different ethnic groups, Misquitos, Tawakas, Pech, Garifunas and Mestizos.
In 1982 it was declared World Patrimony of Humanity by UN; it is a place of pride and of high importance for the international community. It also contributes substantially to the life quality of Honduran citizens since it is the biggest source of oxygen in the country. The Biosphere of Rio Platano is rich of cost marines, rain forests, coral reefs, island keys, and a diversity of fascinating species due to the variety of habitats. The 19th of April it was exactly twenty five years ago the UN declared Rio Platano Biosphere the second biggest oxygen lung of the world. Since then different organizations began a systematic work of protection and development of the area; MOPAWI, joined by ARCA and the German Cooperation. Today they join forces to promote the conservation and sustainable management of the biosphere. They are demanding an educative campaign for the year 2007 initiating on April 19. That date there was a meeting on the Central American Bank of Economic Integration where they, at the same time, where celebrating the twenty fifth anniversary of the Declaration of World Patrimony for Humanity.
Representatives of different productive areas of the country attended the meeting. Oavaldo Munguia, general director of MOPAWI, was in charge of giving the welcoming words to the assistants. He gave a general overview of the Rio Platano Biosphere’s actual situation and its presumed future. The secretary of State in Natural Resources and Environment, Mayra Mejia Delcid, pointed out to the concurrence of the importance of the Rio Platano Biosphere and its great diversity and quantity in extraordinary species that live in the region: “In the more than eight thousand square kilometers of the Biosphere there are more species of trees per hectare than in the Amazonic region it self”.
Lucy Figueroa announced the opening and beginning of the campaign for Rio Platano Biosphere “Forever for the World” mentioning the different activities programmed for the rest of the year. At the same time Figueroa invited each and every one to participate actively in the campaign.
Toady there are only 830 places listed as World Patrimony for Humanity, among them Egypt Pyramids, The Great Chinese Wall, Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands, India’s Taj Mahall, Spain’s La Alhambra and Honduras’ Rio Platano Biosphere.
